Parents as Teachers is an early intervention program with the overarching philosophy of providing parents with child development knowledge and parenting support from pregnancy to when the child is three years old. It is designed as a program for all families. Its 2005 curriculum has a strong component on cultural diversity.
What is the Born to Learn model?
The Parents as Teachers Born to Learn model consists of four service delivery components. While many programs adapt individual model components based on funding, all programs need to provide the four components of the Parents as Teachers Born to Learn Model.
1. Personal visits
2. Group meetings
3. Personal visits Screening
4. Resource network
The Born to Learn Prenatal to 3 Years training is a comprehensive training program that covers all four components of the Born to Learn model, along with:

River Styles® Short Course
The five day course will run in July and November 2008 (note: these dates have yet to be confirmed). We are currently seeking expressions of interested particpants. Contact the program co-ordinator to be advised as to when these dates will be confirmed.
Cost to Attent Workshop &/or Required Text: TBC
Aims of the Short Course
• To outline background principles of river character and behaviour in Australia
• To demonstrate the use of geomorphology as a biophysical template for river management
• To develop a working knowledge of the River Styles® framework
• To demonstrate how to identify and interpret the character and behaviour of River Styles®
• To identify River Styles® and undertake practical exercises in a local catchment
• To discuss controls on downstream patterns of River Styles®
-To provide insight into the geomorphic condition and recovery potential of River Styles®
• To demonstrate linkages between River Styles® and habitat associations along river courses
• To discuss the implications of the procedure to river rehabilitation and waterways management
The intent of the River Styles® short course is NOT to provide fundamental training in fluvial geomorphology. Rather, through demonstration and practical application of the River Styles® framework, participants will develop an understanding of the underpinnings of this approach to river characterisation within a catchment. From this, extension/technical officers will be able to interpret and use the results from the River Styles® framework as a physical template for better-informed decision-making about river rehabilitation and various other aspect of water resources (and aquatic ecosystem) management.
For further details and an outline of material to be covered at this workshop, please see the information flyer from our 2007 courses. Alternatively, information about course content can be found at www.riverstyles.com or by contacting Kirstie Fryirs.
